The Notebook (2004)
"I could be whatever you want. You just tell me what you want, and I'll be that for you."
""You're dumb.""
"I could be that."
I put off watching this for so long because I'm not usually one for romance movies and thought that this was just thee stereotypical romance movie; which it was, but for a reason I understand now, because this shit absolutely wrecked me. I ended up watching it with someone who chose to watch it for her birthday (in which she compared me to Noah, which I'm going to choose to take as a compliment), and I'm glad that she made me finally sit down and watch it, because I had no idea what I was missing out on.
First of all, the immense love that I have for Rachel McAdams. Secondly, Ryan Gosling is growing on me. I love the dynamic between Allie and Noah and the type of love that they have. Allie is such an overthinking sweetheart, and Noah is such a charming risk-taker. I love it. Corny, cheesy, but all the best rom-coms are. The Ferris Wheel scene, the boat scene, even kissing in the rain; unfortunately, I found myself eating it all up.
Also? The ending completely ruined me. Obviously, I picked up on what was going on half-way through the movie with the storyteller and listener, but oh my god, I did NOT expect it to end like that. A tragic (yet artistic) ending to a beautiful love story.
They just aren't doing rom-coms like this anymore in theaters. Although corny, cheesy, and almost throw-up worthy at times, I think that's the kind of hopeless romance that we need to see on-screen again. I would love to see another iconic couple like Allie and Noah emerge in upcoming releases, but we'll just have to see if directors bring back this kind of flame to viewers.
I'm not sure if I'll ever rewatch this, because I'm unsure of whether or not I could sit through it and endure the heartbreak again, but I'm definitely glad that I took the time (even if not my decision originally) to sit down and watch. I understand now why it's so iconic as a rom-com and why it gained the popularity that it did. I apologize for all of the slander that I previously said about this being "just another stupid cliche rom-com" and "sickening and stereotypical" because, while I was right, that's what makes The Notebook everything that it is; beautiful, tragic, heart-shattering, and ultimately goals for the lonely people of the world.
