Wolf Man (2025)

A whole werewolf movie and no traditional howl? Boo, BOOOOO.
This was not a good film, and I should've anticipated that knowing that it was a Blumhouse production and how hit and miss (mostly miss) their movies can be sometimes. Regardless, I'm also a sucker for and huge fan of werewolf cinema, so I was happy just to see werewolves on the big-screen return.
I've only seen Julia Garner in a few productions before this, but I do enjoy her acting; this film is no different, I just unfortunately believe that the writing fell flat and she was truly given nothing to work with. I think the disappointment of this movie was of no fault of the actors, but the poorly written script.
Objectively, this should be a 1.5, at best — for me, it's getting two-and-a-half stars solely because I'm just glad someone made a werewolf movie. It's really unfortunate, because it started off intriguing and interesting, but as soon as the transformation begins, it feels rushed and unfinished.
The trailers truly made this out to be scarier than it actually was. I thought that it was going to be a decent thriller, but it was more of a comedy, almost funny watch. I was also disappointed with the finalized look of the werewolves, in which the special effects makeup was lacking, although I do appreciate the tribute in staying away from CGI in favor of traditional practical effects.
Why was the villainized wolf man (the one that bites him) so much better looking than the main actor's wolf-look? It was barely a "wolf," in my opinion, moreso just teeth and a nose prosethetic. Disappointed, especially for a 2025 release where there was so much potential.
I should not have expected a lot from a January horror release, and I didn't, but was still left feeling empty regardless. It was more of a "just go see it because there's nothing else right now" film, but I still had fun, and love the focus on the wolf man story so it was rated higher than it really should be in reality.
Overall unsatisfied, disappointed, but entertained and hopeful that this will inspire more to continue with the werewolf storylines. I would love to see a really well-done, truly terrifying depiction of a werewolf, and would love recommendations if anybody has.
