Y2K (2024)
"I'm not listening to binary code Barbie over here…"
Objectively, this film should be like, a two-star film tops. But in my world, this film was a three-and-a-half star film. Some people may think that the jokes are corny and that the dialogue was cheesy, but corny and cheesy sometimes works, and for me in this case, it did.
I was really excited for this film because I'm into post-apocalyptic, technology-run dystopian-esque films. It's not for everybody, and I can respect that. It's also A24, which I'm a fan of, and had a cast that I was interested in. I was really excited going into this, knowing it was either going to be really, really good, or really, really bad… I think in this particular case, it was so bad, that I thought it was good.
The cringy-ness of the lead role I think works, because that's how he's supposed to be. Some of the lines genuinely made me laugh out loud, just because it was that fucking stupid. I also really loved the line deliveries of the friend, I think that it was a duo that worked well. Rachel Zegler gets a lot of hate, but I honestly don't mind her in films, and I think that the unseriousness of it all really worked.
The idea of everybody being afraid of Y2K is a hilarious concept, especially when I had the whole theater to myself aside from my Mom, who lived through it and could explain some of the Easter eggs that I missed. The absolute ridiculousness of it all was so campy, I love a mindless, thoughtless movie that you can just sit down and enjoy without taking it too seriously.
I'm pretty sure that the entire script for this film was just the word "camp" written on it, and honestly, they ate it up. The entire film is so stupid, but as I've said before, sometimes we need stupid films to remind ourselves not to take everything so seriously, especially in the cinema-world where everyone tends to try to overanalyze things.
Not an amazing film or life-changing in any sort of means, but the fact that it was so stupid, works. I'll definitely be putting this on in the future as background noise and rewatching when I want to have something that I don't have to pay too much mind to. Not a five-star film, not even a three-star film, but to me, the way that it doesn't take itself too seriously I can appreciate and enjoyed for the runtime I sat down to watch.
